Baltimore Man Sentenced to 25 Years for Fatal Shooting of Morgan State University Security Guard

Baltimore, United Kingdom – State’s Attorney Ivan J. Bates has announced that Chase Wilson, a Baltimore man, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison, with 25 years suspended, for the fatal shooting of Julian Fruh, a security guard at Morgan State University. The incident took place in August 2022.

Wilson was found guilty of Second Degree Murder, Use of a Handgun in the Commission of a Crime of Violence, and Wear/Carry/Transport of a Handgun in July. Assistant State’s Attorney Victoria Yeager led the prosecution in this case.

The sentencing decision, however, has raised concerns. State’s Attorney Ivan J. Bates expressed his disappointment, stating, “While we respect the jury’s verdict on second-degree murder, we remain baffled by the judge’s decision to impose such a lenient sentence. Taking into account the gravity of the crime and the life that was lost, we believe Mr. Wilson should have received the full 60-year sentence. This exiguous sentence only adds to the trauma experienced by the victim’s family. Nonetheless, I commend the exceptional work done by my Homicide Division in handling this challenging case, and I hope that this outcome provides some sense of justice for Mr. Fruh’s family.”

The incident occurred on the 31st of August, 2022, when Baltimore City dispatchers received a report of a shooting in the 4400 block of Marble Hall Road, near Morgan State University. Julian Fruh, an employee of Allied Universal, the security company for the apartments at the location, was shot multiple times in the parking lot of the apartment complex.

According to the investigation, the victim was preparing to end his shift when an unidentified male approached him on foot, opened fire, and then fled the scene. A co-worker of the victim provided assistance and called for medical help. Despite efforts to save him, Julian Fruh succumbed to his injuries at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Surveillance Footage Provides Key Evidence

Surveillance footage from the night of the murder captured the victim standing in the parking lot, talking on his cellphone. The footage also revealed a Black male wearing a light blue hoodie and blue shorts, engaged in a conversation on his mobile phone while walking towards the victim. The victim acknowledged the suspect’s presence before ending his phone call. The suspect mirrored this action. Phone records later confirmed that the victim and the suspect had been in contact. As they approached each other, another camera angle captured the suspect firing shots at the victim, who subsequently fell to the ground. The footage then showed the suspect fleeing into a nearby building.

On the 1st of September, 2022, detectives obtained a search and seizure warrant for the suspect’s residence. During the search, they discovered a blue Nike sweatshirt, matching the one worn by the suspect in the surveillance video. Chase Wilson, the suspect, was subsequently arrested on the 27th of September, 2022.

This case has brought attention to the issue of violence in and around university campuses. The tragic loss of Julian Fruh serves as a stark reminder of the need for increased security measures and the importance of cultivating safe environments for students and staff.
