Mesa Police officials have announced the arrest of two individuals following a carjacking incident that initially started as a car sale.

In a statement released on Jan. 18, Mesa Police identified the arrested individuals as Joseph Toledo, 29, and Iridiane Garcia, 23, both of whom are now facing multiple felony charges.

According to investigators, the incident occurred on Jan. 17 when a mother and her seven-year-old daughter met with a potential car buyer, later identified as Garcia, at a bank near Stapley and McKellips. The mother had listed her 2021 red Dodge Charger for sale on an online platform before the incident took place.

During the meeting, the woman was threatened at gunpoint by Toledo, who demanded the car from her. In fear for their safety, the mother and daughter managed to escape while Toledo and Garcia fled the scene with the stolen vehicle.

Mesa Police revealed that Toledo had used his own phone number to inquire about the car, and it was later traced to him. It was determined that Toledo and the victims were not acquainted prior to the incident.

Authorities were able to locate the stolen vehicle at Banner Deer Valley Hospital, where it was found unoccupied. Further investigation led them to the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, and Reentry, where Toledo was scheduled to meet with his parole officer.

Garcia was found waiting for Toledo in a car parked outside the ADCRR. Upon their arrest, Garcia admitted to having the keys to the stolen vehicle, along with the firearm used by Toledo during the carjacking.

Both Toledo and Garcia now face charges for armed robbery and theft of means of transportation, among other offenses, as per Mesa Police officials.
