Accident – death – Obituary News : **Anambra State Government Takes Mortician to Court Over Missing Corpse**

The Anambra State Government has taken legal action against a mortician at the Magistrates’ Court in Achalla for the disappearance of a 26-year-old woman’s corpse. The Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, made this announcement in a statement through her media aide, Chidinma Ikeanyionwu.

The grieving family members of the deceased, Okeke Chinonso, sought the commissioner’s assistance in locating the missing corpse for a proper burial. According to the statement, Mrs. Rejoice Odogwu (the deceased’s sister) and her husband had deposited the corpse at the New Centuary Medical Complex Mortuary in Isuaniocha on August 4, 2023.

However, when the family was ready to lay their loved one to rest, they were given a different corpse. The family claimed that the mortician insisted that the body they received was the same one they had brought, which they vehemently denied.

Upon closer inspection, the family discovered several inconsistencies with the body they were given. They pointed out that the hair of the body they deposited was cut short, both before and after death. Yet, the body they received had its hair weaved. Moreover, the body they had deposited had never undergone any surgical procedures, while the one they were given had evidence of previous operations.

Frustrated and agitated, Mr. Sopuruchukwu Okeke, a family member, brought the matter to the attention of the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare when they refused to accept the embalmed body. The owner of the mortuary, Uchenna Joseph, allegedly resorted to threatening them for refusing to take the body that did not match their loved one. Subsequently, the case was filed and scheduled for hearing at the Magistrates’ Court in Achalla.

This distressing situation has left the family distraught and desperate for justice. Losing a loved one is already a painful experience, and having their remains mishandled has only added to their grief. The Anambra State Government’s decision to pursue legal action demonstrates its commitment to ensuring that the deceased receives a dignified final resting place.

It is crucial for morticians and those responsible for the care of deceased individuals to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity. The mishandling of corpses not only causes immense emotional distress to grieving families but also erodes public trust in the funeral industry.

The court proceedings will shed light on the circumstances surrounding the missing corpse and hold those responsible accountable for their actions. The Anambra State Government, through the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, will continue to support the grieving family in their quest for justice.

In conclusion, it is imperative that all individuals involved in the funeral process prioritize the utmost respect and care for the deceased. Losing a loved one is a deeply personal and emotional experience, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that their final journey is handled with the utmost sensitivity and professionalism..
