MILFORD, Del. – Delaware State Police are currently investigating a tragic and fatal car accident that occurred on Thursday morning in Milford. The accident resulted in the death of a 78-year-old man from Smyrna, whose identity will not be disclosed until his family and relatives have been notified.

The incident took place around 6:35 a.m. when an Acura sedan collided with the rear of a Chrysler mid-size vehicle while both were traveling southbound on Bay Road. Following the accident, both drivers pulled over to the side of the road. The Chrysler driver pulled into the median, while the Acura driver stopped on the southbound shoulder, according to the police report.

Tragically, the driver of the Acura decided to exit his vehicle and began crossing the highway. However, he was struck by an oncoming Toyota minivan. The impact from the collision proved fatal for the Acura driver. The police report states that the Toyota driver swerved after hitting the Acura driver and subsequently collided with a Ford compact car in another lane. Fortunately, the Ford driver, a 43-year-old man from Woodside, did not sustain any injuries. The Toyota driver, a 66-year-old woman from Laurel, was treated at a local hospital, while her 15-year-old female passenger escaped unharmed.

The driver of the Chrysler, a 28-year-old man from Dover, along with the passengers – a 25-year-old woman from Camden and a 46-year-old woman from Newark – were also taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The accident caused the closure of the roadway for approximately four hours while authorities investigated the scene and cleared the wreckage.
