According to the spokesperson for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, the incident unfolded when deputies spotted a vehicle with a broken taillight travelling south on Interstate 85. The deputies initiated a traffic stop near the Webb Road exit around midnight. When asked to present his driver’s license, the driver claimed he did not have it but provided an alternative form of identification. Meanwhile, the woman sitting in the passenger seat asserted that she was the owner of the car.
The deputies grew suspicious as both the driver and the passenger seemed visibly nervous and exhibited signs of restlessness. To investigate further, the deputies called for a K-9 unit to conduct a search of the vehicle. The trained police dog alerted the officers to the presence of drugs, prompting them to request the occupants to exit the car for a thorough search.
During the search, the deputies discovered a lockbox in the front passenger area and a handbag behind the passenger seat. Inside the handbag, they found a keychain that matched the lockbox. Upon opening the lockbox, the deputies allegedly found a bag containing 37.3 grams of a substance resembling methamphetamine, as well as another bag containing 0.8 grams of a similar substance. Additionally, they discovered a small bag containing a substance resembling heroin, two digital scales, and syringes filled with substances that appeared to be methamphetamine and heroin.
The passenger, identified as 49-year-old Heather Michelle Miller, was subsequently arrested and charged with possession with intent to manufacture a schedule I controlled substance, trafficking methamphetamine, possession of a schedule I controlled substance, possession of marijuana drug paraphernalia, and trafficking heroin or opium. Miller is currently being held at the Rowan County Detention Center on a $20,000 bond.
Records from the N.C. Department of Adult Corrections’ public offender listings reveal that Miller has a history of multiple drug-related convictions.
As for the driver, he was issued a citation for driving with a revoked license and was subsequently released from the scene.
