Illinois State Police Make Arrest for Cannabis Trafficking in Jefferson County

MOUNT VERNON, Ill. (KFVS) – The Illinois State Police Division of Patrol Troop 10 have apprehended a suspect involved in cannabis trafficking in Jefferson County, Illinois.

The arrest was announced by the Illinois State Police (ISP) who identified the suspect as 48-year-old Mikhail V. Subbotin from Lawrenceville, Georgia. Subbotin is facing charges of possession of cannabis weighing more than 5000 grams, cannabis trafficking, and possession with intent to deliver cannabis.

The incident took place around 11:41 a.m. on January 17, when an ISP trooper on patrol along Interstate 64 eastbound near milepost 71 observed a vehicle exceeding the posted speed limit. The trooper promptly initiated a traffic stop and approached the driver, later identified as Subbotin.

Upon approaching the vehicle, the ISP trooper detected a strong smell of cannabis emanating from within. With the driver’s consent, a thorough search of the vehicle was conducted, leading to the discovery of multiple boxes filled with suspected cannabis. Assistance from the ISP Southern Illinois Drug Task Force was sought, and ultimately over 400 pounds of cannabis were seized from the vehicle.

The case was subsequently presented to the Jefferson County State’s Attorney’s Office, which approved the filing of charges against Subbotin. He is currently in custody at the Jefferson County Jail awaiting further legal proceedings.
