The incident began when 33-year-old Albert Alderman called 911 on Sunday morning to report that his live-in girlfriend, Kelsie Barnier, 29, was unresponsive and not breathing at their residence. When police arrived, Barnier was already deceased. Although there were no visible signs of trauma, the coroner later determined that she had died from strangulation.

Detectives initially spoke to Alderman at the scene, who agreed to meet with them after the coroner’s ruling. However, he later changed his mind, according to police.

At around 3:00pm on Sunday, SWAT Team officers spotted Alderman leaving his home and attempted to stop him. During the pursuit on Dorr Street, Alderman stopped and opened his car door before quickly speeding off. He drove through Sleepy Hollow Park before returning to Dorr Street. Eventually, Alderman reached Avondale Avenue, where he slowed down and pointed a gun at the officers. In response, one officer fired a round from his rifle into the back window of Alderman’s vehicle.

Alderman then turned onto Secor from Avondale and suddenly stopped. He exited his vehicle and pointed his gun at the police, prompting four officers to fire at him. They shot again when Alderman attempted to get up and once again pointed his gun at the officers. Alderman was pronounced dead at the scene.

As per department policy, the officers who discharged their weapons have been placed on paid administrative leave.
