Suspect Arrested in Connection with Unprovoked Stabbings in New York City

A suspect has been taken into custody in connection with a series of unprovoked stabbings that occurred in the Queens borough of New York City, according to the New York City Police Department (NYPD). The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Jermain Rigueur of Queens, was arrested on Wednesday evening following a swift investigation by law enforcement officials.

Multiple Charges Filed Against the Suspect

Rigueur has been charged with three counts of attempted murder, four counts of assault, one count of attempted assault, and four counts of criminal possession of a weapon. The NYPD has described the attacks as “senseless, unprovoked attacks” during a press briefing held by Commissioner Edward Caban.

Random Attacks with Unconnected Victims

These random attacks targeted individuals who were unconnected to each other. The suspect was captured on surveillance footage shortly after one of the assaults, wielding a hunting knife. Fortunately, none of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries.

Timeline of the Attacks

The first assault took place on January 8th at around 6:20 p.m. ET. A 61-year-old man was walking alone in the Springfield Gardens neighborhood when he was stabbed in the lower back by the suspect. In a chilling detail, Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny revealed that the suspect laughed in the victim’s face after the attack. The victim was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital after a good Samaritan called 911.

About a week later, on Tuesday shortly after midnight, a 34-year-old woman was walking home in Springfield Gardens when the suspect approached her from behind and stabbed her in the right side. According to Kenny, the attacker appeared to be speaking “jibberish” to himself. The victim, in stable condition, was also taken to an area hospital.

Three additional stabbings occurred on Wednesday morning within an hour of each other. Two victims, a 74-year-old man and a 41-year-old man, were attacked while in Springfield Gardens. The suspect stabbed the 74-year-old man in the back while he was escorting his wife to work. Moments later, the suspect stabbed the 41-year-old man in the abdomen without saying a word. Approximately 25 minutes later, a 36-year-old man got into an altercation with the suspect over a seat on a bus. When they both exited the bus in Jamaica, the suspect stabbed the victim.

Authorities have confirmed that the suspect in all these incidents is connected. The police are also investigating whether the male suspect is linked to a stabbing that took place on a subway train in Brooklyn on Wednesday morning.

Increased Police Presence

Following the series of stabbings, the NYPD has deployed additional officers to the subway system and increased the number of officers in the 113th Precinct in Queens. The suspect, described as a man wearing a green jacket, a black hoodie, and either white Converse or black and white Adidas sneakers, was seen in some incidents wearing a lanyard and surgical mask.

As the investigation continues, the NYPD is determined to ensure the safety of the community and bring those responsible for these unprovoked attacks to justice..
