PINE BELT, Miss. (WDAM) – The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) has recently provided new information regarding a tragic incident that took place in Perry County. The incident involved an officer-involved shooting in George County, which resulted in the unfortunate death of one deputy.

Autopsy Results Confirm Cause of death

According to MBI, the autopsy results of 43-year-old Rickey Powell have revealed that he died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. This shocking revelation sheds new light on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Initial Incident

The incident unfolded when Powell was suspected of fatally shooting Deputy Jeremy Malone of the George County Sheriff’s Office during a routine traffic stop on U.S. Highway 98 in Lucedale on January 4. Tragically, Deputy Malone lost his life in the line of duty.

Following the shooting, Powell fled the scene, prompting a massive response from multiple law enforcement agencies. The pursuit of the suspect extended beyond George County, with the Mississippi Highway Patrol and George County Sheriff’s Office joining forces to apprehend Powell near Beaumont.

During the engagement between law enforcement and Powell, multiple rounds were fired. The confrontation ultimately resulted in Powell sustaining fatal injuries at the location near Beaumont.
