President Ranil Wickremesinghe of Sri Lanka is set to play a prominent role at two major international summits taking place in Uganda next year. The 19th Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the 3rd South Summit of the Group of 77 and China will be held in Kampala from January 19 to 22, 2024, according to the President’s Media Division (PMD).
President Wickremesinghe has been invited by President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda to attend these significant global gatherings, where he will not only participate but also deliver speeches at both the NAM Summit and the South Summit.

During his visit to Kampala, President Wickremesinghe will engage in discussions with leaders from the Global South, with a particular emphasis on strengthening ties with African nations.
The theme of this year’s Summit is “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence,” and it will commence with meetings of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Senior Officials. The NAM, which consists of 120 member-states and was established on the principles of the Bandung Conference, aims to promote the interests of developing nations. Sri Lanka, as a founding member, previously held the position of Chair from 1976 to 1979.
Simultaneously, the Third South Summit, operating under the theme “Leaving No One Behind,” aims to enhance cooperation among its 134 member states in various areas including trade, investment, sustainable development, climate change, poverty eradication, and the digital economy.
As the largest coalition of developing countries within the United Nations, the Group of 77 empowers the Global South to advocate for collective economic interests and strengthen their negotiating capacity on major international economic issues.

Uganda is set to assume the chairmanship of both NAM and the G77 & China, taking over from Azerbaijan and Cuba, respectively.
