Phoenix police and Silent Witness, a nonprofit organization that collaborates with the Phoenix Police Department to identify suspects in criminal cases, held a press conference on Wednesday alongside the family of 27-year-old Leonel Pineda-Valdez, who was fatally shot. The authorities are appealing to the public for any information that can help locate the suspect.

The incident occurred on October 30, 2022, when Phoenix police responded to a shooting near 67th Avenue and Thomas Road. According to a police news release, Pineda-Valdez was found unresponsive in the driver’s seat of his vehicle, which had collided with a fence at a nearby business. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Sgt. Brian Bower, a spokesperson for the Phoenix Police Department, stated that the investigation revealed Pineda-Valdez was in the Walgreens parking lot when he became involved in an argument between an unknown man and woman. Multiple witnesses reported hearing gunshots and saw a suspect leaving the scene in a dark-colored sedan. It is important to note that no weapons were found on Pineda-Valdez, and initial investigations indicate that he was not an aggressor in the incident.

During the press conference, Pineda-Valdez’s family joined the police and members of the press at the Phoenix police headquarters. A television screen displayed a series of snapshots capturing Pineda-Valdez’s life, showcasing his loving interactions with family and friends. Described as a hardworking, driven, and intelligent individual, Pineda-Valdez was known for his frequent smile and his favorite Chicago Bulls hat.

Danitza Pineda, the victim’s sister, expressed confusion and grief over the tragic event. She stated that her brother was not the type of person to engage in arguments or fights, making it difficult for them to understand why this happened to him. Danitza pleaded for anyone with information to come forward and contact Silent Witness, emphasizing the importance of finding justice for her brother.
