BENTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — Kentucky State Police is currently conducting an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred on January 9 in Marshall County.

According to a news release issued by the Kentucky State Police, Deputy Nick Spears of the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office witnessed what he believed to be a theft in progress at around 4:30 p.m. CST. The incident took place at a residential construction site located on Harold King Drive in Benton. Deputy Spears noticed a pickup truck that was backed up to a utility trailer.

Deputy Spears reported that he observed a man standing behind the truck, who was later identified as 43-year-old John B. Ross from Paducah, according to Kentucky State Police.

The situation escalated when Ross allegedly fired shots at Deputy Spears. In response, Deputy Spears returned fire at Ross. Fortunately, Deputy Spears was not hit by the bullet discharged from Ross’s gun.

Following the incident, Ross was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. He was later released and subsequently arrested on multiple charges. Ross is now facing charges of attempted murder of a police officer, being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun, and theft by unlawful taking, with the stolen property estimated to be valued between $10,000 and $1,000,000.

Additionally, another individual named Kevin M. Sorensen, a 35-year-old resident of Paducah, was present in the driver’s seat of the pickup truck during the incident. Sorensen was also apprehended and charged with first-degree burglary. However, the charge was later amended to theft by unlawful taking, with the stolen property valued between $10,000 and $1,000,000.

Both Ross and Sorensen have waived their preliminary hearings and are scheduled for arraignment on February 13.

In accordance with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department policies, Deputy Nick Spears, who has served with the department for five years, has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation.
