The incident took place around 9:40 a.m., when a team was diligently working on clearing a separate crash site along the Indiana Toll Road, situated to the north of Shipshewana. It was during this time that 31-year-old Umidjon Abduazizov, the driver of a pickup truck, lost control of his vehicle.

According to the Indiana State Police, the pickup truck veered off course, side-swiping a tow truck before colliding with both the tow truck driver and a vehicle involved in the previous accident.

Tragically, the tow truck driver, identified as 63-year-old Martin Troyer, was pronounced dead at the scene by the authorities. Another individual assisting with the cleanup of the initial crash sustained injuries, although they are currently not believed to be life-threatening, as confirmed by the Indiana State Police.

Preliminary findings from the ongoing investigation suggest that excessive speed played a significant role in the crash. Additionally, authorities noted that the road conditions were treacherous due to the presence of snow at the time of the incident.

In response to the crash, the Indiana State Police implemented a temporary closure of the left, westbound lane of the Indiana Toll Road, ensuring the safety of both the investigators and other road users. This lane closure remained in effect until approximately 1:45 p.m., while the investigation was underway.

Upon concluding their investigation, the Indiana State Police will transfer all relevant information to the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Office for further review and appropriate action.
