This revelation came just hours after the State claimed that Fotis had brutally killed Jennifer.

At the time of the messages, Fotis had not yet been identified as a suspect in the murder. He and Jennifer were embroiled in a bitter divorce and child custody battle, but the true extent of his involvement had not yet come to light. It wasn’t until later that Fotis would be charged with her murder, while his new partner, Michelle Troconis, was accused of helping him conceal the crime. The trial of Michelle Troconis began in Stamford Superior Court last Thursday, with nanny Lauren Almeida, 32, taking the stand this week to give her testimony. Almeida testified about the messages she received from Fotis, shedding light on his behavior following Jennifer’s disappearance.

Jurors were shown messages from Fotis to Almeida at 9:49 pm on the day of the killing, asking her to call him the next morning. Almeida revealed that she had consulted with the police about whether she should respond, and they advised her that it was fine since Fotis was not a suspect at the time. The following day, at 5:39 am, Fotis texted Almeida asking for any news on Jennifer. Almeida replied, informing him that the police were still searching Jennifer’s New Canaan home. In the days that followed, Fotis repeatedly asked for updates and inquired about the well-being of their children.

Almeida described Fotis’ behavior as “weird” and testified that he had a scheduled visit with the children in a few days. He pressed her to ensure that she would bring the children to the visit on time. During her testimony, Almeida wore a silver necklace with the number ‘5’ on it, possibly symbolizing the five Dulos children who are still under her care.

The trial also revealed that the Dulos couple’s once-idyllic life had deteriorated due to Fotis’ affair with Michelle Troconis. Jennifer discovered the affair in March 2017 while the three of them were on a holiday in Aspen with the children. This revelation marked the beginning of the end for their marriage.

Almeida shared additional details about Jennifer’s fear of Fotis, stating that she had tried to escape from their Farmington, CT home with the children two months later. Jennifer went to the Mandarin Oriental, a five-star hotel in Manhattan, where she hired a bodyguard for protection. The nanny and the children stayed at the hotel for a week before moving to their first rental in New Canaan, CT.

Eight days after their move, a child custody case between Jennifer and Fotis began. Almeida testified on Jennifer’s behalf and recounted a heated encounter with Fotis in the corridor of the courthouse. She described him as aggressive, accusing her of kidnapping their children. Later, Fotis approached her with his lawyer, apologizing for his behavior.

Almeida previously worked at a daycare where she met the Dulos family. She portrayed Jennifer as an incredibly nurturing and playful mother, while Fotis was largely absent from their children’s lives.

Michelle Troconis, who is accused of helping Fotis conceal the crime, denies all charges against her, including conspiracy to commit murder, evidence tampering, and hindering prosecution. Prosecutors allege that Fotis brutally attacked Jennifer in her New Canaan property before disposing of bloodied items in 30 garbage cans with Troconis’ assistance. Jennifer’s body has never been found.

The trial, which began on January 11, is expected to continue for six weeks before the jury begins deliberations.
