The incident occurred on GA 365 in Hall County on the evening of January 16.

According to the preliminary crash report, Oxner was driving a Toyota Camry in the northbound lane when he rear-ended a Chevrolet Avalanche. The driver of the pickup had slowed down to make a right turn into a driveway. The report states that Oxner was following too closely and struck the rear of the Avalanche, causing both vehicles to veer off the east shoulder of the roadway.

The collision resulted in injuries to Oxner as well as two occupants of the pickup truck. The injured individuals have been identified as 35-year-old Tambra Armour of Alto and her 15-year-old son Brayden Blackburn. They were transported by Habersham County EMS to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. Fortunately, they were treated for their injuries and released several hours later, according to their family.

Oxner sustained serious injuries but left the scene in a personally owned vehicle. It is unclear whether law enforcement cleared him to leave the scene. GSP Public Information Officer Courtney Floyd has confirmed that charges are pending against Oxner.

The wreck is currently under investigation by GSP Post 6 in Gainesville.

This is not the first time Oxner has been involved in a traffic accident. After being fired from the sheriff’s office in June 2021 for wrecking his patrol vehicle in an off-duty accident where alcohol was involved, Oxner was hired as a reserve officer by the Alto Police Department. In that incident, he was charged with DUI less safe and failure to maintain lane. However, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of reckless driving in Habersham County State Court. As a result, he was sentenced to 12 months of probation and a $1,000 fine. Additionally, Oxner was ordered to complete 20 hours of community service, with the option to pay off the service at a rate of $7.25 per hour.

GSP is expected to release the latest charges against Oxner in a report by the end of this week. Now Habersham will provide an update once this information becomes publicly available.

In conclusion, Howard Chance Oxner, a former Habersham County deputy, is facing charges in another traffic crash. This incident is currently under investigation by GSP, and more details will be released soon. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story..
