A Cuban man has been arrested in Brazil in connection with the murder of art dealer Brent Sikkema, whose body was discovered in his home in Rio de Janeiro. The arrest came just days after Sikkema’s death, shocking the art world and leaving many questions unanswered.

Sikkema, 75, was the founder of the renowned gallery Sikkema Jenkins & Co. His lifeless body was found at an apartment he owned in the affluent neighborhood of Jardim Botânico. The Civil Police in Rio de Janeiro confirmed the news, sending shockwaves through the art community.

Authorities in Rio de Janeiro released a statement revealing that the suspect was apprehended at a gas station between the cities of Uberaba and Uberlândia in the state of Minas Gerais. The arrest came after investigators analyzed security camera footage and obtained a warrant for the suspect’s arrest.

According to Alexandre Herdy of the Capital Homicide Police, “We have no doubt that it was a premeditated crime. What remains are doubts about the purpose of the crime, whether it was stealing or whether there was another motive.”

Sikkema’s lawyer shared that the suspect had stolen jewelry and valuables worth approximately R$180,000, which Sikkema intended to use to furnish a recently acquired apartment in Leblon.

The suspect, a 30-year-old Cuban man, was identified by the Capital Homicide Police in a separate statement. The Rio-based newspaper O Globo named him as Alejandro Triana Trevez, but the suspect’s identity has not been officially confirmed by Artnet.

Authorities are now investigating whether Trevez had a relationship with Daniel Sikkema, Brent Sikkema’s ex-husband, who is also reportedly from Cuba. Friends of Sikkema revealed to the Folha de São Paulo newspaper that Brent had been involved in a legal battle to gain permission to see the son they shared, who was born through a surrogate. Daniel allegedly demanded $6 million from Brent in order to allow him to see their son.

The shocking turn of events has left the art world in mourning and searching for answers. The police are continuing their investigation to uncover the truth behind Brent Sikkema’s tragic death and the motive behind the alleged murder.
