The crime spree began when Ocala police officers responded to a robbery at the Paddock Mall on August 7, 2022. Employees of a JCPenney store reported that Gelonese had stolen several items of infant clothing and shoes, with a total value of $454. Gelonese then fled the store and ran towards State Road 200.

Shortly after, officers received reports of another robbery at Logan’s Roadhouse on SW 19th Ave. The victims, who were in a van parked in front of JCPenney, stated that Gelonese approached their vehicle and demanded that they drive or he would shoot them. It was later discovered that Gelonese had stolen the merchandise from the JCPenney store.

During the incident, one of the victims managed to push Gelonese halfway out of the van, and the driver quickly sped away, causing Gelonese to fall from the vehicle. Gelonese didn’t stop there, as he also attempted to rob a woman sitting in her car near Logan’s. He demanded $20, claiming that his wife was pregnant. When the victim threatened to call the police, Gelonese fled the scene.

Several days later, Gelonese was identified by some of the victims through a photographic lineup. He was arrested and charged with burglary of a conveyance with assault, burglary of an occupied conveyance, and petit theft. Due to his previous criminal record and status as a prison release reoffender, Gelonese now faces severe minimum mandatory sentences, including the potential for life in prison.
