Teen’s Charges Dismissed in Killing of 16-Year-Old Girl, But Refiling Possible

Fort Wayne, Indiana – A shocking development has occurred in the case of the 2022 killing of 16-year-old Le’Brishia Hobbs. Charges against a 17-year-old boy extradited from Texas and initially charged as an adult in the shooting death have been dismissed. However, prosecutors have indicated that they may refile the charges in the near future.

In July 2022, Raymond Lee Washington III allegedly shot Le’Brishia Hobbs in the head as part of a plot with two other teenagers to steal her cell phone. However, due to Washington’s age at the time of the shooting, the adult charges against him were dropped, and new charges have been filed in the Allen County Superior Court Juvenile Division.

Prosecutors are planning to request that a judge in the juvenile division allow them to try Washington as an adult, as is typically done with serious crimes like murder when the accused is 16 years old. The media release from the prosecutors states, “Due to Washington’s age, this is not an automatic adult case.”

The case initially gained media attention when it was believed that a romantic relationship between Hobbs and another girl, Elaysha Underwood, was the motive behind the killing. Underwood, who was initially charged as an adult with attempted murder and later charged with murder after Hobbs’ death, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder and has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Jalayah Brown, another girl involved in the case, was charged as an adult with conspiracy to commit murder and aiding a criminal. Brown has pleaded guilty to the aiding a criminal charge and could face 1 to 6 years behind bars.

Recent court documents reveal that investigators now believe Underwood and Brown were in a romantic relationship and planned to steal Hobbs’ phone, which they believed contained intimate photos of them. Washington was allegedly brought into the plan to assist with the theft, and he is accused of shooting Hobbs in her backyard after Underwood lured her outside with messages through social media.
