Wellbeing Check Leads to Startling Discovery

On Monday, Jan. 15, the HCSO responded to a residence on Elkin Avenue in Spring Hill to conduct a routine wellbeing check on William Scott Trudell. Authorities were alerted by a concerned family member, who suspected that Dakota Lee Croft may have been involved in Trudell’s death.

Upon arrival, deputies encountered a man identified as 33-year-old Dustin McMillan, who initially refused to allow them entry by locking the front door. However, as one of the deputies proceeded to the backyard, a tragic sight awaited them. Croft was discovered hanging from a tree. Further investigation led the deputies to find Trudell’s lifeless body in a nearby wooded area, with noticeable “drag marks” leading from the side garage door.

A Plan Unveiled

During questioning, McMillan disclosed that he and Croft had purchased alcohol earlier that day and had been drinking together. Shockingly, McMillan admitted that they had devised a plan to attack Trudell. According to McMillan, Croft’s motive stemmed from his anger towards Trudell for disrespecting women in the home and frequently reporting incidents to the authorities.

McMillan further confessed that they “ambushed and killed” Trudell as soon as he entered the garage. Subsequently, a family member stumbled upon Trudell’s lifeless body in the garage before hastily leaving the scene. McMillan and Croft then proceeded to move the body to the nearby wooded area and initiated efforts to clean up the garage, aiming to eliminate any potential evidence. Tragically, it was during this time that Croft took his own life by hanging himself.

Arrest and Charges

Following the disturbing incident, authorities promptly arrested McMillan on charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. He is currently incarcerated at the Hernando County Detention Center, being held without bond. The HCSO is urging anyone with relevant information about the case to contact Hernando County Crime Stoppers at 1-866-990-8477. Tipsters have the option to remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward of up to £5,000.

This shocking incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of human behavior and the importance of maintaining open lines of communication within our communities. The HCSO remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of Hernando County residents as they diligently investigate this tragic murder-suicide case.
