Gilbert Police Take Months to Arrest Attackers

Newly released court documents reveal that Gilbert police took several months to make arrests in the case of a teenage boy who was brutally assaulted at a local fast food restaurant. Despite having witness accounts and video evidence of the attack on the night it occurred, the police delayed their actions.

On August 18, the victim was punched and kicked in the parking lot of the In-N-Out located near Santan Village Parkway and Williams Field Road in Gilbert. After the incident, the victim informed his father, who promptly notified the police. Investigators discovered that the attack was a result of the victim reporting threats made by a 16-year-old to a school resource officer. The victim stated that the teen had sent him a photo of a gun and had even visited his house to intimidate him.

According to the recently released court documents, Gilbert police interviewed the 16-year-old suspect on the night of the attack. The suspect claimed to have recorded the assault on video, stating that he was merely going to watch the fight unfold. The video footage showed multiple individuals assaulting the victim, with one of the attackers, identified as 18-year-old Christopher Elijah Makhi Fantastic, stealing the victim’s shoes after the incident. The group quickly fled the scene, and fortunately, the victim did not sustain any serious injuries.

Delayed Identification and Arrests

Shockingly, it wasn’t until more than four months after the attack, on December 22, that the Gilbert Police Department released screenshots from the video, seeking public assistance in identifying the attackers. Two days later, 18-year-old Aris Michael Arredondo voluntarily spoke to the police but denied any involvement in the assault. Consequently, he was released without charges.

Finally, on January 9, Fantastic was apprehended at his residence in Gilbert at around 8 p.m. Upon his arrest, he requested legal representation and was subsequently booked into jail, facing charges of felony aggravated robbery and misdemeanor assault.

Following the release of the video, tips began pouring in, identifying Arredondo as one of the individuals who had punched the victim in the mouth and initiated the altercation. The footage showed Arredondo flexing his muscles during the fight and uttering provocative statements, saying, “Which one of y’all homies wants it too, n****?” as more teenagers joined in the assault.

Gilbert police then arrested Arredondo on January 17 at his residence in Mesa. During questioning, he admitted to engaging in a verbal altercation but claimed to have only made a “flinching motion” without physically striking the victim. Arredondo further revealed that another teenager, believed to be Fantastic, had given him the victim’s shoes that night. Arredondo admitted to wearing the stolen shoes for several months but did not have them in his possession at the time of his arrest. As a result, Arredondo now faces charges of felony aggravated robbery and felony aggravated assault.
