Woman killed in Wrong-Way Crash on Interstate 8 Suspected to be DUI

A tragic incident occurred over the weekend on Interstate 8 near state Route 163, resulting in the death of a woman. The fatal crash was caused by a wrong-way driver who is suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to authorities.

On the early morning of the incident, at approximately 12:44 a.m., the California Highway Patrol received a call about a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on the eastbound lanes of I-8. The wrong-way vehicle, identified as a white Honda Civic, was reported to be heading westbound in the opposite direction of traffic.

In a swift response, law enforcement dispatched a helicopter to track the wrong-way driver. The helicopter was able to locate the Honda Civic near College Avenue. Unfortunately, the situation took a tragic turn when the suspect vehicle collided with a black Nissan Kicks in the far left traffic lane of I-8 westbound, east of College Ave.

The impact of the collision resulted in severe injuries to the 49-year-old driver of the Nissan. The victim was rushed to the hospital but sadly succumbed to her injuries. Meanwhile, the wrong-way driver, identified as 24-year-old Briana Michelle Contreras, also sustained major injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Briana Michelle Contreras now faces serious charges, as she has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities are working diligently to gather all the necessary evidence.

Following the crash, westbound lanes of I-8 were temporarily closed for approximately two hours to allow for a thorough investigation of the accident scene. The closure caused significant traffic disruptions and delays in the area.
