Accident – Death – Obituary News : Salt Lake City Woman Charged with Fatally Shooting Man During Argument

A Salt Lake City woman, Vanessa Nicole Johnson, has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting and killing a man during an argument outside a home in late December. This incident comes just months after Johnson was out on bail for another shooting incident earlier in the year.

According to court documents, Johnson, 32, was arguing with Jeremy Martin, 45, outside a home near Wenco and Riverside drives on December 30. Surveillance video from a neighbor captured the altercation, showing Martin yelling in the front yard before a white car backed into the driveway. Martin and two others engaged in a heated exchange with an individual who exited the car, which resulted in Martin being shot. The video then shows Martin stumbling back out of view.

Law enforcement later identified Johnson as the shooter. When the police and paramedics arrived at the scene, Martin was pronounced dead. He had suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest, and a .22 caliber shell casing was found nearby. The white car, which was registered under Johnson’s name, was also captured on video at a nearby convenience store, providing important evidence for the investigation.

A witness who was present in the car with Johnson at the time of the incident recounted what she saw. According to the witness, Johnson stepped out of the car to retrieve a phone charger from the trunk. Suddenly, the witness heard arguing and then a loud noise. When she looked outside, she saw blood on the ground and Johnson holding a gun. Johnson then threw the weapon into the car’s center console and instructed the witness to drive due to being pepper-sprayed and temporarily blinded. The witness complied and drove Johnson to a nearby convenience store, where she bought milk to rinse out Johnson’s eyes.

This tragic incident occurred while Johnson was out on bail for another shooting incident in August. During an argument over a parking spot, Johnson allegedly pulled out a gun from under her car seat and began shooting randomly, injuring a passerby in the shoulder. Fortunately, the victim’s injuries were not life-threatening. Johnson was charged with discharge of a weapon with injury and had posted bail of $2,500. She was released pending a court appearance scheduled for February.

Johnson’s current charges for murder are considered a first-degree felony. A judge has ruled that she should be held without bail in the Salt Lake County jail. Her initial appearance hearing for the alleged homicide is set to take place on Thursday, while the hearing related to the previous shooting is scheduled for February.
