BROCKTON (WBSM) — Two men were arraigned on Tuesday for the shooting death of 22-year-old Joe Araujo inside a Brockton restaurant. Jamal Bazile, 18, of Brockton pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, and discharge of a firearm. Nathan Veiga, 22, pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and accessory before the fact. Both men were ordered to be held without bail.

The incident occurred on January 12 at the Hibachi Sushi Supreme Buffet on Crescent Street. Brockton Police responded to a reported shooting inside the restaurant at around 7:24 p.m. Joe Araujo was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital with gunshot wounds to his abdomen and leg but tragically succumbed to his injuries.

Thanks to evidence collected and witness testimony, including footage from the restaurant’s surveillance cameras, the police were able to identify and apprehend the suspects. The video showed Jamal Bazile, wearing a distinct jacket and sneakers, dropping a to-go box and pulling out a firearm. He shot the victim three times, hitting him twice.

During the investigation, Brockton Police executed a search warrant at Nathan Veiga’s residence, where they discovered the distinct jacket worn by Bazile during the shooting. Veiga was subsequently taken into custody.

Jamal Bazile was apprehended at a residence in Hyannis on Monday night. However, he allegedly became combative and assaulted the police officers during his arrest. Upon searching him, a loaded 9mm Smith and Wesson firearm with four rounds of ammunition was found in his possession.

Both defendants are scheduled to appear in court again on February 13 for a probable cause hearing.

Increased Crime Rate Statistics in Southcoast Towns

According to the Massachusetts Crime Statistics, crime rates in various Southcoast communities have been on the rise. The data collected includes information on total arrests, DUI/OUI charges, violent crimes, and hate crimes.

It is disheartening to see an increase in crime in these towns, as it affects the safety and well-being of the residents. Law enforcement agencies and local authorities must work together to address this issue and ensure the security of the community.
