According to Mt. Vernon Police Chief Trent Page, the authorities are confident in their understanding of what transpired during the incident but are still working to uncover the reasons behind it. The incident was reported to the 911 call center on Saturday afternoon, prompting officers to rush to the scene in the 1800 block of Lamar Street. Upon arrival, they discovered a teenager who had been shot and critically injured. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, the victim, identified as 16-year-old Julissa Mercedes Laslie from Mount Vernon, tragically succumbed to her injuries.

Chief Page revealed that upon their arrival, the officers encountered a male suspect armed with a handgun. They were able to apprehend him without any resistance and safely secure the firearm. The possession of the gun by the suspect raises questions about how he obtained it and whether it was legally owned.

The shooting took place in an area known for its high crime rate, adding to the complexity of the investigation. Chief Page explained that determining the ownership of a firearm is not as straightforward as identifying a vehicle’s owner through its serial number. He assured that the detectives are actively looking into this aspect of the case.

While the origin of the gun remains uncertain, what is clear is that the suspect was illegally in possession of a firearm. Chief Page highlighted that given the suspect’s age, being under 21 and under 18, his possession of a handgun already constitutes a violation of Illinois state law.

The case is currently being handled in juvenile court, preventing the state’s attorney’s office from discussing it in detail. However, due to the severity of the circumstances, there is a possibility that the case may be transferred to adult court in the future. Chief Page stated that if this were to happen, further information about the suspect may be made public.

Chief Page also disclosed that the suspect in custody has a history of criminal activities, including prior charges related to firearms possession. This history includes a previous arrest for armed robbery with a firearm and aggravated battery. The suspect had previously been convicted and sentenced to several years in prison within the Jefferson County courts. However, he was released after just eight months and was found to be once again in possession of an illegal firearm and additional ammunition when apprehended.

The Mt. Vernon Police Department is determined to bring justice to the family affected by this tragic incident. Chief Page expressed the frustration of seeing a young life cut short and affirmed the department’s commitment to their part in the ongoing investigation.

The funeral arrangements for Julissa Mercedes Laslie have been scheduled. Visitation will be held at the Newell Funeral Home in Mount Vernon on January 27, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., followed by the funeral ceremony at 2 p.m.

As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of a promising young individual and hopes for swift justice to be served..
