Man Shot During Alleged Burglary Attempt in Butler County Passes Away

A tragic incident occurred in Butler County, where a man who was shot during an alleged burglary attempt has sadly passed away. The incident took place in the early hours of Saturday morning, and the victim, identified as 37-year-old Darren Vennerman from Chanute, Kansas, succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday morning.

According to Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs, deputies responded to a report of a shooting at around 3 am on Strawberry Lane in Qulin. Upon arriving at the scene, the deputies discovered that an intruder had attempted to break into a residence and was shot five times by the homeowner in self-defense.

Following the shooting, Vennerman was airlifted to a Memphis hospital for treatment but unfortunately could not recover from the complications caused by the gunshot wounds. Butler County Coroner Jim Akers confirmed his passing.

Under Missouri’s self-defense laws, the homeowner has not been charged in connection with the incident, as they acted within their rights to protect themselves and their property.

Suspect Arrested in New Madrid County Fatal Shooting

A shocking development unfolded in New Madrid County as authorities announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with a fatal shooting. The incident occurred shortly before 6 pm on Monday, when deputies from the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call in Howardville regarding a woman with a gunshot wound who was unresponsive.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered the lifeless body of 45-year-old Shannon Mansfield. Further investigation led to the arrest of 45-year-old Shaundale T. Maxwell on charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Maxwell is currently being held without bond at the Mississippi County Jail.

Deputy Survives Crash on Black Ice

A Northeast Arkansas Sheriff’s Deputy narrowly escaped a potentially dangerous situation when their vehicle crashed due to black ice. The incident occurred during the early morning hours on Tuesday while the deputy was on patrol.

Greene County Sheriff Brad Snyder reported that the deputy encountered black ice at the intersection of two County Roads around 1 am. The slick conditions caused the deputy’s truck to slide into a ditch. Thankfully, the deputy only sustained minor injuries and was promptly checked at the hospital. The front end of the truck also sustained minor damage.

Motorists are urged to remain cautious, especially during the morning hours, as black ice can create hazardous driving conditions.

Heroic Officers Rescue Woman from Burning Home

In a daring rescue, Kennett Police Officers saved a wheelchair-bound woman from a burning home on Sunday. The incident occurred shortly before 6:30 pm when the Kennett Police and Fire Departments received a report of a structure fire on South Hopper Street.

Upon arrival, officers learned that a woman in a wheelchair was still inside the burning residence. Without hesitation, two police officers entered the building and successfully carried her to safety. Their swift actions prevented a potential tragedy.

Mingo National Wildlife Refuge Closures for Feral Hog Control

Mingo National Wildlife Refuge will experience intermittent closures this month as part of an animal control initiative. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Inspection and Health Service will conduct a multiple-day aerial operation to control the population of feral hogs on the refuge until January 24th.

For public safety, the entire refuge, including all roads, will be closed to public entry during the operation. The closure applies to all modes of transportation, including vehicles, bicycles, and horseback riding.

Southeast Missouri Man Receives 12-Year Prison Sentence for Drug and Gun Offenses

A Southeast Missouri man has been handed a substantial prison sentence of 12 years for his involvement in drug and gun crimes. Christopher Calicott, 43, pleaded guilty last April to multiple felony charges, including possession of methamphetamine and cocaine with intent to distribute, as well as possession of a firearm in connection with drug trafficking.

As part of a comprehensive investigation, authorities executed a search at Calicott’s residence near Sikeston, leading to the discovery of significant quantities of drugs, firearms, and cash. The seized items included 60 grams of cocaine, 247 grams of methamphetamine, 124 grams of marijuana, a loaded 9mm semiautomatic pistol, a loaded 12-gauge shotgun, $6,600 in cash, and drug paraphernalia.

Both Christopher Calicott and his wife, Jodi Calicott, admitted their involvement in drug-related activities. Jodi Calicott previously received a five-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to possession of methamphetamine and cocaine with intent to distribute.

Christopher Calicott’s sentence serves as a stern reminder of the severe consequences awaiting those who engage in drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession.
