Man Charged in Ambush-Style Shooting of Police Officer in Scranton

Scranton, PA – Aiden Gabriel Deininger Facing Charges in Officer’s Shooting

Aiden Gabriel Deininger, a 20-year-old resident of Old Forge, has been charged with multiple offenses, including attempted homicide of law enforcement officers and criminal homicide, following an ambush-style shooting that left a Scranton police detective critically wounded. The incident occurred in northeastern Pennsylvania last week.

Details of the Ambush Shooting

The shooting took place at approximately 4:30 a.m. on Thursday when three Scranton police detectives were sitting in an unmarked police vehicle on the west side of the city. The detectives had received information indicating that a shooting was about to occur. It was during this time that Deininger, identified as the suspect, noticed the police vehicle and fired five rounds into it. Two of the bullets struck police Detective Kyle Gilmartin in the head.

Responding to the attack, another officer returned fire, shooting the suspect five times. Deininger collapsed nearby, and both he and the injured officer were swiftly transported to Geisinger Medical Center for treatment.

Prosecution and Investigation

District Attorney Mark Powell has vowed to prosecute the case aggressively, seeking maximum penalties for Deininger. Powell believes that the suspect was aware that the individuals in the vehicle were police officers. The authorities suspect that two earlier incidents, involving shootings into homes, are related to this case. Another individual has already been arrested and faces charges in connection with those incidents.

Ambush Attack Described as Brazen and Reckless

Describing Deininger’s actions as “brazen, reckless, and without regard to human life,” Powell emphasized that the shooting was an ambush. He further noted that only Officer Gilmartin was injured, thanks to the quick actions of other officers who were present or arrived at the scene promptly. Powell stressed the severity of the attack, highlighting the fact that five shots were fired at close range into a vehicle occupied by three police officers.

As of now, Officer Gilmartin remains in critical condition, although he is showing remarkable progress, according to Powell.

Legal Proceedings and Detention

Deininger appeared in court for his arraignment while still in his hospital bed. Once he is discharged, he will be transferred to county prison without bail. No defense attorney is listed in the court documents, and attempts to contact the defendant have been unsuccessful. The county public defender’s office has not been contacted in relation to this case.
