The Salt Lake County District Attorney has formally filed murder and abuse of desecration of a human body charges against Evans. Newly filed court documents have revealed chilling details about the events leading up to his arrest.

It all began on January 3 when police were called to “A Place for Your Stuff,” a temporary storage facility catering to those experiencing homelessness. A witness reported not seeing Hinkebein at work and became concerned after noticing bloody handprints on the wall and carpet in the back office on January 1.

The concerned coworker questioned Evans about the whereabouts of Hinkebein, to which Evans responded that he was “fine.” However, Evans appeared defensive and unwilling to engage in further conversation about the matter.

The following day, the coworker returned to work and noticed that the blood had not been cleaned up. Once again, they approached Evans for answers. This time, Evans simply replied, “He’s done.” The coworker interpreted this statement as an indication that Hinkebein was dead.

Alarmed by this revelation, the coworker immediately contacted the authorities. When the police arrived at the scene, they discovered Hinkebein’s lifeless body, a hammer covered in blood, and a black garbage bag filled with bloody clothes.

The Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy and determined that Hinkebein had sustained at least 15 sharp and blunt force injuries to his head, consistent with a hammer. Additionally, three sharp force injuries were found on his neck and throat. Blunt force trauma to the head was identified as the cause of death.

During the course of the investigation, police interviewed a driver who had picked up Evans shortly before the alleged homicide. The driver claimed to have overheard Evans stating that he intended to go to a warehouse to “kill a guy down there by bashing his head in.” Although the motive is yet to be determined, the driver reported that Evans mentioned the victim had interfered with his belongings and mistreated him.

Following his arrest, Evans admitted to working with Hinkebein but claimed not to have seen him since December 29. He denied entering the back office and refuted any conversation with the concerned coworker regarding Hinkebein’s welfare.

Evans is currently being held without bail at the Salt Lake County Jail.

The community remains shocked by this tragic incident, and authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the brutal attack. As the case progresses, it is hoped that justice will be served for David Hinkebein and his grieving family..
