Two Las Vegas Police Officers Honored for Heroic Actions During UNLV Campus Shooting

In a recent announcement, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Foundation revealed that Officers Jacob Noriega and Ty Vesperas will be receiving the prestigious “Good Ticket” award for their exceptional bravery and composure during the tragic shooting incident at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) campus on December 6, 2023.

Arriving as first responders at the scene of the shooting, Noriega and Vesperas were confronted with a harrowing sight. They discovered a shooting victim outside Beam Hall, the location of the deadly attack, in urgent need of medical assistance. However, due to the area not being secured, medical units were unable to access the victim.

Working quickly and drawing upon their recent emergency medical training, the officers took decisive action. They skillfully applied a tourniquet to the victim’s wounds and safely placed the individual in the trunk of one of their patrol vehicles, with Noriega accompanying them. Vesperas then drove the vehicle to a secure location where a medical unit could safely meet them. It was during this time that the officers discovered the victim had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. Without hesitation, they took turns applying pressure to the wound, ensuring the victim’s survival until medical help arrived.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Foundation expressed their admiration for the heroic actions of Officers Noriega and Vesperas, emphasizing that their calmness under pressure and unwavering dedication to community safety exemplify the qualities of outstanding law enforcement officers. This incident serves as a powerful reminder of the crucial importance of well-trained officers in protecting and serving the community.
