Accident – death – Obituary News : Downtown Indy Seeks Help in Solving First Homicide of the Year

Indianapolis, IN – Homicide investigators in Indianapolis are seeking assistance from the public in solving the year’s first murder, which occurred in downtown Indy. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) received a call just after 10 p.m. on the first Friday of the year, reporting a man with a gunshot wound in the lobby of Hotel Indy at the intersection of Delaware and East Washington streets.

Upon their arrival, IMPD officers discovered the victim, identified as 35-year-old Corey Brown, who had been shot at the IndyGo bus station before seeking help at the nearby hotel. Tragically, Brown succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the hospital.

The shooting is believed to have taken place at the Julia Carson Transit Center, located across the street from the City-County Building. Despite nearly two weeks of investigation, authorities have yet to identify the perpetrator or establish a motive for the crime.

“We’re hoping someone was out around that time and saw something and will come forward,” stated IMPD Officer William Young. “Imagine it was one of your family members that was a victim of gun violence.”

In an effort to aid in the investigation, police have vowed to utilize various technologies, including public safety cameras and B-link cameras located throughout downtown. The transit center itself is equipped with surveillance cameras, although no footage or suspect information has been released by the detective handling the case.

Corey Brown’s death marks the first homicide of 2024 in downtown Indianapolis. The city experienced a surge in homicides in 2020, but the numbers have since decreased over the past two years.

Court records reveal that Brown had a criminal history and had struggled with homelessness and mental health issues in recent years. However, regardless of his personal circumstances, Officer Young emphasized the importance of community cooperation in solving the case.

“Nothing beats cooperation from the community whenever we’re investigating a homicide or aggravated assault or any crime for that matter,” said Young.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact IMPD Detective Gary Smith by calling (317) 327-3475 or emailing Gary.Smith@indy.gov.

In conclusion, the downtown Indianapolis community is banding together to help solve the first homicide of the year. As the investigation continues, authorities are relying on the assistance of the public and innovative technologies to bring justice to Corey Brown and his family. By working together, they hope to prevent future tragedies and ensure the safety of their community..
