Overview

The Justice Department has confirmed that it will be publishing a report on Thursday regarding its review of the law enforcement response to the Uvalde school shooting. This review, known as the “Critical Incident Review,” is not a criminal investigation into the tragic events that took place in May 2022 at Robb Elementary School. Instead, it aims to provide an independent and comprehensive account of how law enforcement responded to the shooting, examining various aspects such as officer training, command and control response, deployment of resources, and the support offered to the victims and their families.

Comprehensive Review by the DOJ’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS)

The review was carried out by the DOJ’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), which consists of a team comprising federal staff and subject matter experts, including former local, state, and federal law enforcement officials. Their objective was to thoroughly assess the law enforcement response during the Uvalde school shooting and provide an unbiased evaluation.

Concerns Raised by Uvalde Families and State Officials

Several Uvalde families and state officials have expressed their dissatisfaction with the law enforcement response to the massacre, which stands as the second deadliest school shooting in U.S. history. According to previous reports by ABC News, it took a staggering 77 minutes for any of the nearly 400 law enforcement officers present on that day to confront the shooter.

Resolution Through a SWAT Team Intervention

The tragic siege finally came to an end when a SWAT team from the U.S. Border Patrol launched a counterassault. During the operation, the lone gunman, Salvador Ramos, was shot and killed.

Ongoing Criminal Investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety

A criminal investigation conducted by the Texas Department of Public Safety is currently underway to determine whether the failures in public safety contributed to the deaths of the victims. However, the findings of this investigation have not yet been released to the public. Following the shooting, Pete Arredondo, the school district police chief, was terminated from his position, the entire district police force was disbanded, and several state troopers were dismissed.
