BROWNSVILLE Police Department Releases New Details in Deadly Christmas Officer-Involved Shooting

Tragic Incident Leaves One Dead After Attempted Assault on Officer

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Brownsville Police Department has provided new information regarding a deadly officer-involved shooting that occurred on Christmas morning. According to a custodial death report, 28-year-old Jorge Abram Carrillo was killed after allegedly attempting to run over a police officer. The preliminary cause of death was reported as a gunshot wound to the head.

Disturbance Reported on Christmas Morning

On December 25, at approximately 12:21 p.m., the Brownsville PD received multiple calls reporting a person with a firearm causing a disturbance near the intersection of Sahara and Siesta Drives. One of the callers witnessed a man with a gun confronting another individual at the intersection.

Another caller reported that an unknown man had randomly confronted her daughter’s boyfriend at their house. Uncertain if the man was intoxicated, the caller contacted the authorities to ensure her family’s safety.

Officer Confronts Suspect

Upon arriving at the scene, the first responding officer observed Carrillo driving a white older model Chevy Corsica behind a group of individuals. The reporting party informed the officer that Carrillo had a gun and was chasing them.

Concerned for the safety of the public, the officer grabbed his rifle and exited his unit. He pointed his weapon at Carrillo, ordering him to stop and put the vehicle in park. However, Carrillo refused to comply.

Deadly Encounter Unfolds

Ignoring the officer’s commands, Carrillo raised his left hand out of the window and slowly drove forward onto La Posada Drive, eventually entering Ramada Drive. The officer re-entered his vehicle and pursued Carrillo to the 670 block of La Quinta Drive.

As the officer exited his unit once again, Carrillo intentionally veered left and then right, directly towards the officer. Fearing for his life, the officer opened fire, shooting multiple rounds at Carrillo. The vehicle collided with the police unit before coming to a stop.

Tragic Outcome

Approaching Carrillo’s driver side door, officers discovered him slumped over with major head trauma. It was apparent that Carrillo had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

While preserving the scene, officers noticed the vehicle beginning to emit smoke. Small flames appeared, prompting the officers to quickly extinguish the fire using a nearby hose and fire extinguisher.

Conclusion

The Brownsville Police Department’s investigation concluded that Carrillo had displayed a firearm without discharging it and had used his vehicle as a weapon. This tragic incident highlights the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty and serves as a reminder of the risks they take to protect the community.
