Baltimore Residents Fear for Safety as Gun Violence Continues

BALTIMORE — Gunfire has once again plagued the Belair-Edison neighborhood, leaving residents concerned for their safety. In two separate incidents within a 24-hour period, two individuals were struck by bullets, resulting in one fatality.

A Tragic Loss on Mayfield Avenue

Authorities report that on Monday evening, a 39-year-old man was shot and killed in the 2800 block of Mayfield Avenue. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body and head, tragically losing his life. As snowflakes fell, crime lab technicians diligently collected evidence and documented the scene where this senseless act of violence occurred.

Despite the chilling weather, residents cautiously made their way through the crime scene tape, seeking refuge from the bitter cold that accompanied the Arctic blast sweeping across the state.

A Second Shooting on Harwell Avenue

The following day, gunfire erupted once again in the 3200 block of Harwell Avenue, less than two blocks away from where the body of the 39-year-old man had been recovered. This time, a 17-year-old boy was struck by a bullet, resulting in facial injuries. The teenager promptly approached patrolling officers at the intersection of Mayfield Avenue and Belair Road to report the incident.

A History of Violence in Belair-Edison

The Belair-Edison neighborhood in Baltimore has unfortunately experienced sporadic episodes of violence in the past. In 2023 alone, records indicate several instances of gunfire, claiming the lives of three individuals.

One such incident occurred on March 1, 2023, when a 21-year-old man was fatally shot near the intersection of Belair Road and Erdman Avenue. Despite being rushed to the hospital, medical personnel were unable to save him.

Another tragedy unfolded on July 8, 2023, when a 52-year-old woman was found shot inside a house in the 2800 block of Clifton Park Terrace. Cynceray Washington-Greene lost her life, and Neil Cole-El, 56 at the time, was arrested in connection with the shooting. According to charging documents, Cole-El claimed that a person who entered his home to sell an illegal firearm accidentally shot Washington-Greene.

Just a week later, on July 15, 28-year-old Demetrik Wallace was shot and killed in the 3500 block of Cliftmont Avenue.

The recent incidents in Belair-Edison serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing gun violence that plagues the community. The residents fear for their safety and yearn for a peaceful resolution to the escalating crime rates.
