Police Investigating the Case as a Possible Mob Lynching

In a disturbing incident that occurred in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, a 25-year-old man named Jitu Das was allegedly brutally murdered by a violent mob on suspicion of involvement in cattle smuggling. The incident took place in the early hours of Wednesday, according to the police.

It is believed that Jitu Das was caught by a group of locals in Morigaon’s Kumoi village area, who accused him of smuggling cattle. The mob then proceeded to beat him mercilessly with bamboo sticks, resulting in his death.

Upon receiving information about the incident, a police team swiftly arrived at the scene. However, the perpetrators had already fled by the time they arrived. Jitu Das was found in an unconscious state and was immediately rushed to a nearby government hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing medical care.

The Superintendent of Police (SP) of Morigaon district, Hemanta Kumar Das, revealed that Jitu Das had sustained severe injuries to the back of his head, leading to profuse bleeding. The body has been sent for postmortem examination and will subsequently be handed over to the grieving family members.

Authorities have initiated a suo moto case and launched an investigation into the tragic incident. The police are waiting for the arrival of Jitu Das’ family members in Morigaon to gather further information and any potential additional complaints they may have.

Speaking to HT, SP Das stated that this horrifying incident can be classified as a case of mob lynching. However, the exact number of individuals involved in the attack remains uncertain at this time.

This distressing incident once again raises concerns about mob violence and the need for stricter law enforcement to prevent such acts in the future. The Assam police are determined to identify and apprehend those responsible for this heinous crime, ensuring that justice is served for Jitu Das and his grieving family.
