Mobile County Sheriff’s Office Investigates Deadly Shooting in Prichard

In a tragic incident on Monday night, a shootout on I-165 in Prichard resulted in the death of a 16-year-old girl and the injury of a 9-year-old boy. The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office believes that this violent encounter had gang ties.

The victim has been identified as Jayln Marie Lindsey, contrary to earlier reports stating she was 15 years old. The family confirmed her age as 16 to News 5.

Gang Ties Suspected in Deadly Shootout

According to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, two groups of people were firing at each other on the interstate. Sheriff Paul Burch expressed his concern about the reckless disregard for human life, stating, “This is just another example of someone firing indiscriminately into a car or a house. These people who are committing these acts don’t care where those bullets go or who they hit.”

Investigators believe that the intended target of the shooting was an 18-year-old in the car, and Lindsey and the 9-year-old were unintended victims. Based on this information, the sheriff’s office suspects gang involvement in the incident.

The sheriff’s office has provided pictures of the bullet-ridden Nissan Armada where Lindsey was killed and the 9-year-old boy was injured, highlighting the severity of the attack.

Collection of Evidence on I-165

The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office closed both northbound and southbound lanes of I-165 for a second time on Tuesday afternoon. Deputies walked along the interstate, collecting case shells, shattered glass, and projectiles that could potentially lead them to the suspects in the other vehicle involved in the shootout.

The Armada involved in the shooting had two women in the front seat. The driver was the mother of the 18-year-old and the injured 9-year-old. Lindsey’s mother and a 4-year-old were in the passenger seat. The 18-year-old, Lindsey, and the 9-year-old were seated in the middle row, while a 4-year-old was in the third row.

Sheriff Burch expressed gratitude that the 4-year-old in the back seat was not hit by a bullet. He stated, “The back of the vehicle was riddled with bullets; it was only by the grace of God the 4-year-old was not hit by a bullet.”

Investigation and Potential Charges

Sheriff Burch mentioned that the 18-year-old in the Armada returned fire with a handgun after the other car shot at him. However, it is still too early in the investigation to determine if he or anyone else in the Armada will face charges.

Furthermore, Sheriff Burch revealed that the 9-year-old who was shot had also been a victim of a previous drive-by shooting last year. The child’s mother is currently uncooperative with law enforcement, prompting the involvement of the Department of Human Resources.

Expressing his disappointment, Sheriff Burch said, “You would think that you’ve got a child that’s been shot now for the second time in a year. A 9-year-old and then your niece, who’s been murdered, you would think you would want to be overly cooperative.”

Ongoing Investigation

No arrests have been made in connection with the gang-related shootout on I-165. The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation into this tragic incident, working towards bringing those responsible to justice.
