A devastating tragedy has struck a Texas family as a 6-year-old girl, Ah ‘Laynah Modica-Ross, was shot and killed in her home on Fitzhugh Avenue in Dallas. The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 10, while the grieving mother was in the process of finalizing the funeral arrangements for her 14-year-old son. The details surrounding the shooting remain unclear, as authorities have yet to release any additional information.
Suspect Detained and Charged with Tampering with Evidence
During the investigation, a 19-year-old man named Damariya Sowels was detained and charged with tampering with evidence. Sowels also had outstanding warrants for a separate case. It is alleged that he brought two handguns, including a MAC-10, into the townhome where the tragic incident occurred. He reportedly admitted to placing the gun on top of a game system. Authorities discovered the weapons hidden inside a backpack in the garage.

Double Tragedy Strikes Family
This heartbreaking incident follows the recent loss of Ah ‘Laynah’s older brother, Ah’bralen Rider, who also fell victim to gun violence. The grieving mother, Brittney, received the devastating news while making preparations for her son’s funeral. Ah’bralen was fatally wounded on December 29, and a teenager was taken into custody in connection with his death.
Support for the Grieving Family
The family is now faced with the daunting task of organizing a joint funeral for both siblings while dealing with immense emotional turmoil. To help with the costs of the memorials, they have set up a GoFundMe page, which has already raised nearly $6,000 as of Tuesday. Michael Key, the siblings’ grandfather, expressed his belief that the gun should never have been present in the home, especially within reach of a young child.
“When I think about it, it shouldn’t have been an accident because no gun should’ve been in this house, and no gun should’ve been in the sight of a 6-year-old child,” Key lamented.
Concluding Thoughts
The loss of two young lives in such a tragic manner has left this Texas family shattered. As they grapple with the unimaginable grief and try to find strength in the face of adversity, their story serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of gun violence. May Ah ‘Laynah Modica-Ross and Ah’bralen Rider rest in peace, and may their loved ones find solace and support during this incredibly difficult time.
