National Gun Violence Survivors Week: A Call for Accountability
As I sit here writing this letter to the editor, I can’t help but feel disheartened by the recent wave of gun violence that has plagued Cape Girardeau. It’s only been three weeks into 2024, and we have already witnessed a mass shooting along with two other shootings in our community. It is high time that we hold individuals accountable for their actions.

Honoring National Gun Violence Survivors Week
From January 22nd to January 26th, communities across the nation will come together to honor the sixth annual National Gun Violence Survivors Week. This is a time for us to reflect on the human toll of gun violence in America and acknowledge the lives lost to this senseless act. It is alarming to note that every day, more than 120 Americans lose their lives due to gun violence.
The Alarming Disparity
When we compare the gun homicide rate in the United States to that of other developed countries, the statistics are staggering. The rate in the US is 26 times higher, highlighting a significant disparity that demands our attention. It is crucial to recognize that common-sense public safety laws have the potential to reduce gun violence and save lives.
Impacting Lives
Gun violence affects individuals from all walks of life, leaving an indelible impact on victims, their families, friends, and the communities they call home. It is a problem that transcends boundaries and affects us all. In fact, research indicates that 59% of adults have either personally experienced gun violence or know someone who has. This number rises to 71% among African Americans and 60% among LatinX individuals.
Defining Survivors
When we talk about survivors, we must adopt an inclusive perspective. Survivors encompass anyone who has experienced gun violence firsthand, whether they have witnessed an act of violence, been threatened, or even wounded by a gun. This definition extends to various scenarios, including domestic violence involving firearms, unintentional shootings, and gun-related suicides.

In conclusion, it is imperative that we hold people accountable for their actions.
