The accused, identified as Fouad L., a medical student, allegedly shot and killed his neighbour and her 14-year-old daughter before proceeding to the crowded Erasmus hospital. Armed with petrol bombs, he entered the hospital and created chaos.

Regrettably, the 32-year-old, commonly known as the “Erasmus shooter” in the Dutch media, was not present for the start of the trial. The proceedings took place under strict security measures in the port city of Rotterdam.

Within the hospital premises, the accused barged into a classroom and fatally shot a 43-year-old teacher. Investigators believe that his actions were driven by anger after successfully passing his medical exams but being required to undergo a psychological evaluation.

Prior to the rampage, prosecutors had alerted the hospital about the suspect’s “psychotic” behavior, which included disturbing incidents such as lying half-naked on a pile of leaves, laughing maniacally, and subjecting his pet rabbit to torture.

The trial, which has attracted significant attention, will shed light on the motive behind the accused’s violent actions and provide justice to the victims and their families. The Netherlands hopes that this trial will serve as a reminder of the importance of mental health evaluations and the prevention of such tragic incidents.
