Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have claimed responsibility for striking what they allege were Israeli “spy headquarters” in Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region. The attack, which took place on Monday, resulted in the deaths of four individuals and left six others injured, according to the Kurdistan Region Security Council. However, the Iraqi government has condemned the strikes, deeming them a violation of their sovereignty. Israel’s government has yet to comment on the Iranian claims.

In a separate incident, authorities in Kurdistan reported on Tuesday morning that they had successfully shot down three armed drones flying over Irbil airport. The airport is home to US and international forces. At this time, no information has been provided regarding any damage or casualties resulting from the incident.

These Iranian strikes occur against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the region since the outbreak of conflict between Israel and the Iran-backed Palestinian group Hamas in the Gaza Strip on 7 October. The conflict has begun to spill over, involving militias allied to Iran operating in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen.

Adrienne Watson, spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, stated, “We will continue to assess the situation, but initial indications are that this was a reckless and imprecise set of strikes.” Watson emphasized the United States’ support for Iraq’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, noting that no US personnel or facilities were targeted.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards declared that they had destroyed “one of the main Mossad espionage headquarters in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region” with ballistic missiles. The statement explained that the attack was carried out in response to the “recent atrocities of the Zionist regime.” This is not the first time Iran has launched missile attacks in Iraqi Kurdistan, as they have previously targeted sites used by Iranian separatist groups and alleged agents of Israel.

In a tragic incident in Kerman, southern Iran, a previous missile attack resulted in the death of at least 94 people and left numerous others injured. Such actions by Iran further contribute to the increasing tensions in the region.
