Perry High School Shooting Tragedy Forces Relocation of Iowa Caucus Sites
Perry, a small town in Iowa, is still grappling with the heartbreaking loss of a student and the principal of Perry High School. This devastating incident occurred when a gunman opened fire on January 4, resulting in the deaths of the principal and a student. In light of this tragedy, the Dallas County Republicans made the decision to move the caucus sites out of Perry High School. Raymond Knapp, a committee member of the Dallas County GOP, made the call to relocate the caucus to Perry Elementary School as a respectful gesture towards the grieving community.
According to ABC, Raymond Knapp expressed the emotional impact of this tragedy by saying, “There’s a lot of people and it’s hard to imagine how many feelings it brings up of people who didn’t even have children in the school at the time.”
The decision to move the caucus sites out of Perry High School was not only made out of respect, but also to ensure the safety and security of everyone involved. He believes that empowering teachers with the ability to protect their students is crucial, as demonstrated by the heroic act of Perry High School principal, Dan Marburger. Marburger sacrificed his own life while attempting to shield the students from the shooter.
The shooting incident claimed the lives of two individuals, including 11-year-old Ahmir Jolliff, and left several others injured. The perpetrator, 17-year-old Dylan Butler, ultimately turned the gun on himself. It is believed that Butler had intended to cause even more harm, but the incident occurred before the start of the school day, resulting in fewer individuals being present in the building.
Prior to Marburger’s tragic passing, the Uvalde Foundation For Kids, a national nonprofit organization established in response to the Uvalde massacre in May 2022, had initiated an emergency fund to aid with his medical expenses. Marburger’s selfless actions were recognized as he bravely attempted to protect his students.
The relocation of the Iowa caucus sites serves as a reminder of the resilience and unity displayed by the Perry community in the face of this devastating tragedy.
