New York City police are on the lookout for a suspect following a tragic incident over the weekend at a subway station in Brooklyn. The victim, Richard Henderson, a 45-year-old man from Brooklyn, was fatally shot inside the Franklin Avenue Subway Station in Crown Heights.

According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), officers responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting at around 8:15 p.m. on Sunday. Upon arrival, they discovered Henderson on a train inside the station, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his back and shoulder. Emergency personnel rushed him to the hospital, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead.

The investigation into this shocking development is currently ongoing, and no arrests have been made yet, as stated by the NYPD. Reports suggest that Henderson was attempting to break up a fight on the subway when he was shot. Eyewitnesses revealed that two other passengers were engaged in a heated argument over loud music when Henderson intervened. Tragically, one of the passengers pulled out a gun and fired at Henderson, striking him in the back and shoulder.

Richard Henderson leaves behind his wife, three children, and two granddaughters, according to The New York Times. His wife, Jakeba Henderson, described him as a hero who lost his life while trying to protect others. She said, “He got shot stepping into an altercation that he had nothing to do with. He died a hero. He died doing what he did — taking up for the weak.”

Gun violence remains a concern in New York City, despite its decline in recent years. Everytown for Gun Safety’s annual report ranks New York as having the second-strongest gun laws in the country, with low rates of gun violence and ownership. However, subway shootings have made national headlines in recent years.

In 2022, a disturbing incident occurred when a 62-year-old man set off smoke bombs and shot 10 people on a Manhattan-bound train arriving at a Brooklyn subway station. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison. Last November, two individuals sustained minor injuries after being shot on a subway train in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood.

Although the NYPD has reported a decrease in the number of shootings in recent years, the city still faces challenges in combating gun violence. In 2023, there were over 960 shootings, representing a 24% drop from the previous year. Additionally, there were about 400 fewer shooting victims in 2023 compared to 2022, where more than 1,500 individuals were shot.

The tragic shooting at the Franklin Avenue Subway Station serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing battle against gun violence in New York City. As authorities continue their investigation, the community mourns the loss of Richard Henderson, a brave individual who lost his life while trying to make a difference..
