American Art Dealer Found Dead in Rio de Janeiro Apartment

An American art dealer, Brent Sikkema, who co-owned the renowned contemporary art gallery Sikkema Jenkins & Co., was discovered dead in an apartment in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The local authorities are treating the case as a homicide investigation.
The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro State, responsible for handling the case, released a statement confirming that their homicide department is actively investigating the death of Brent Sikkema, aged 75. Forensic examinations have been conducted at the location where his body was found.
In their official statement, the civil police force stated, “Officers will gather information from witnesses, seek further details, and conduct other necessary inquiries to shed light on the case.”
Brazilian newspaper O Globo reported that Sikkema was allegedly killed with a sharp object, although precise details regarding the incident remain limited. The U.S. Consulate in Rio has confirmed the death of a U.S. citizen.

Sikkema Jenkins & Co., situated on 22nd Street near the Chelsea Piers in Manhattan, New York, showcases the works of various artists, including Jeffrey Gibson, Arturo Herrera, Sheila Hicks, Vik Muniz, and Kara Walker. The gallery, co-owned by Brent Sikkema, has been a prominent player in the contemporary art scene since its establishment in 1991.
Brent Sikkema embarked on his art career in 1971 as the director of exhibitions at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York. He later opened his first gallery in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1976.
Sharing a glimpse into his personal life, Sikkema once described himself as a “chaos kind of guy” during a visit to Zurich, Switzerland, in 2021. He expressed a fondness for destinations like Brazil and Cuba.
