Shelby County Jail Inmate Found Dead in Cell: Investigation Underway

An inmate at the Shelby County Jail, commonly known as 201 Poplar, has tragically died after being found unresponsive in his cell, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI). The deceased has been identified as 28-year-old Ramon McGhee. The incident occurred on January 10, 2024, marking the first death at 201 Poplar this year.

Upon discovering McGhee unresponsive, he was immediately transported to a hospital, although the exact hospital remains undisclosed. The Shelby County District Attorney’s office promptly called in the TBI to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding McGhee’s death.

While both the TBI and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office have declined to comment on specific details concerning McGhee’s passing, TBI spokeswoman Susan Niland confirmed that an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death.

According to court records, McGhee had been booked at 201 Poplar on February 6, following an indictment for two counts of first-degree murder and especially aggravated robbery. These crimes had taken place in November 2022. Unfortunately, further information regarding the case is currently unavailable through Shelby County’s criminal justice portal.

201 Poplar has recently been the center of controversy, with activists and attorneys raising concerns about the jail’s safety. Last year, The Commercial Appeal interviewed a parent of a former inmate who alleged that the food served at 201 Poplar was spoiled, with visible mold and mildew on the trays. The conditions within the jail have been questioned repeatedly.

In an investigative report last August, The Commercial Appeal revealed that there had been a staggering 52 deaths at 201 Poplar between 2016 and the time of publication. These figures have further amplified concerns regarding the welfare of inmates within the facility.
