A tragic incident occurred in Greenfield, MA, when a small plane crashed, resulting in the loss of three lives. The victims have been identified as Chad Davidson, a student pilot from Woodstrock, William Hampton, a flight instructor from Indian Orchard, MA, and Fredrika Ballard, the owner of the flight school from Southwick, MA.

The accident took place on Sunday when the Beechcraft 55 Baron Twin-Piston, owned by the Fly Lugu school, crashed into a small clearing within the Leyden Wildlife Management Area. The crash site was discovered at approximately 12:33 p.m. by authorities.

Upon arrival, Greenfield firefighters and American Medical Response paramedics confirmed that all three occupants of the plane had tragically lost their lives. The victims were identified through the joint efforts of the Massachusetts State Police and the Northwest District Attorney’s Office.

Investigations revealed that the ill-fated flight had departed from Barnes Airport in Westfield at around 11:06 a.m. on Sunday. It was determined that Davidson, Hampton, and Ballard were the only individuals on board the plane at the time of the crash.

State police detectives, in collaboration with the Northwest District Attorney’s Office, meticulously processed and documented the crash site. The wreckage was carefully examined to gather valuable evidence to determine the cause of the accident.

Following the necessary procedures, the bodies of the victims were respectfully removed from the wreckage by firefighters and subsequently transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for further examination.

The search for the crash site was initiated after Greenfield dispatchers received distressing 911 calls from concerned dog walkers in Leyden and Greenfield. These individuals reported witnessing a plane in imminent danger of crashing, prompting immediate action.

In response to the incident, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Aviation safety inspectors promptly arrived at the crash site. Additionally, a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigator is expected to join the investigation on Monday to further assess the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

At this stage, it remains unclear what factors contributed to the crash. Authorities are diligently working to gather all available information and evidence to determine the cause of this devastating incident.
