Third Man Charged with Murder in Shooting of Oakland Police Officer

Prosecutors have recently filed murder charges against a third individual in connection with the fatal shooting of Oakland police officer Tuan Le. The Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price charged Marquise Cooper, a 34-year-old man, with first-degree murder, conspiracy, and burglary.

According to media reports, Cooper is currently held without bail at the Alameda County jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned at an Oakland courthouse on Tuesday morning.

Previous Charges and Arrests

In earlier developments, prosecutors announced murder charges against Mark Demetrius Sanders, 27, and Allen Starr Brown, 28, for their involvement in the killing. Another defendant, Sebron Ray Russell, 28, was charged with burglary related to the incident preceding the shooting.

The mother of Mark Demetrius Sanders, Felicia Williams, 48, was also arrested on January 4 on suspicion of aiding her son’s escape from the state. However, she was later released as prosecutors decided not to file charges against her.

The Shooting Incident

The tragic shooting occurred on December 29, 2023, when Officer Tuan Le, dressed in plainclothes and driving an unmarked vehicle, responded to reports of a burglary at a cannabis dispensary located on Oakland’s Embarcadero near Fifth Avenue. The incident took place south of Interstate 880, close to the Jack London Aquatic Center.

Officer Le was shot during the response and was immediately transported by fellow officers to Highland Hospital. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at approximately 8:45 a.m.

Prosecutor’s Response

The District Attorney’s Office has not yet commented on the recent reports regarding the murder charges filed against Marquise Cooper. Further information is expected to be revealed as the case progresses.

Prosecutors aim to seek justice for the loss of Officer Tuan Le and ensure that those responsible for his untimely death are held accountable.
