Brightline Train Accidents in Florida Under Investigation by NTSB

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced on Saturday that it will be conducting an investigation into two separate accidents involving Brightline trains in Florida. Tragically, these incidents resulted in the loss of three lives at the same railroad crossing along the high-speed train’s route between Miami and Orlando.

Accidents Occur at US-1 Corridor in Melbourne

The first accident took place on Wednesday, followed by another on Friday at an intersection along the US-1 corridor in Melbourne, located on Florida’s Atlantic coast. These accidents occurred as the Brightline train was passing through on its daily routes to and from South Florida. According to an Associated Press database, these recent incidents bring the total number of deaths since Brightline’s launch in September to five.

Victims Identified and Injuries Reported

The victims of the Friday accident were identified as Lisa Ann Batchelder, 52, the driver, and Michael Anthony Degasperi, 54, the passenger, both from Melbourne. On Wednesday, Charles Julian Phillips, 62, lost his life when his vehicle was struck by a train. Additionally, three passengers in Phillips’ vehicle suffered injuries, according to Melbourne Police.

Safety Concerns and Public Awareness Campaigns

Melbourne Mayor Paul Alfrey expressed his concerns about the recent accidents. He revealed that the SUV involved in Wednesday’s incident was attempting to escape from the approaching train. Mayor Alfrey has had discussions with Brightline officials about conducting another public safety campaign to raise awareness among riders and warn them to avoid railroad crossings due to the train’s higher speeds.

“If your arm is down, don’t walk around,” Mayor Alfrey advised in an interview with Orlando television station WKMG. He emphasized the importance of following safety precautions and urged people to adhere to them to prevent unfortunate situations and loss of life.

Brightline Trains: High Speed and Efficiency

Brightline is known for its distinctive bright neon yellow trains that can reach speeds of up to 201 km/h in certain areas. The journey between Miami and Orlando covers a distance of 230 miles (378 kilometers) and takes approximately 3.5 hours, making it around 30 minutes faster than the average trip.

A team from the National Transportation Safety Board has been assigned to investigate the accidents and will be present at the site for several days, beginning on Saturday. NTSB spokesperson Sarah Taylor Sulick informed The Associated Press that a preliminary report will be released within 30 days, with a final report expected within 12 to 24 months.

Since its inception in July 2017, Brightline has unfortunately recorded a total of 108 deaths. However, it is important to note that none of these incidents were found to be the fault of the railroad. Most of the fatalities were the result of suicides, pedestrians attempting to cross the tracks in front of the train, or drivers bypassing barriers instead of waiting.

Among the more than 800 rail companies in the United States, Brightline currently has the highest mortality rate, with one death for every 38,000 miles (61,000 kilometers) traveled. A rolling tally analysis conducted by the Associated Press since 2019 reveals that California commuter line Caltrain has the second-worst rate among railroads that travel at least 100,000 train miles annually, averaging one fatality per 125,000 miles (201,000 kilometers) traveled during the same period.
