Iowa Principal Dies after Heroic Act During School Shooting

DES MOINES, Iowa — Tragedy struck the Perry High School community as Principal Dan Marburger, who courageously put himself in harm’s way to protect students during a school shooting earlier this month, passed away on Sunday. The news of his untimely demise was confirmed by the Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory, following an announcement made by his family on a GoFundMe page.

The incident occurred on January 4th when a school shooting started in the cafeteria as students were gathering for breakfast. Sadly, an 11-year-old middle school student lost their life in the attack, and six others sustained injuries. The 17-year-old student responsible for the shooting also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The day after the tragic event, the state Department of Public Safety acknowledged Principal Marburger’s selfless act, stating that he had placed himself in harm’s way to protect his students.

The news of Principal Marburger’s passing was shared by his wife, Elizabeth, on a GoFundMe page. According to her post, he passed away at approximately 8 a.m. on Sunday. The Perry Facebook page was quickly inundated with an outpouring of support, with nearly 200 people expressing their condolences within the first hour of the announcement.

Principal Marburger’s heroic actions and his ultimate sacrifice have left a lasting impact on the Perry High School community and beyond. His dedication to the safety and well-being of his students will be remembered and celebrated.
