The incident occurred on January 4 at Perry High School when a 17-year-old shooter opened fire, resulting in the death of a student and several injuries. Principal Dan Marburger was critically wounded while trying to shield the students from harm.

Governor Reynolds praised Marburger’s bravery, stating, “Dan courageously put himself in harm’s way to protect his students, and ultimately gave his own life to save them. He will forever be remembered for his selfless and heroic actions.”

In a heartfelt Facebook post on the same day, Marburger’s daughter, Claire Marburger, confirmed that her father had undergone surgery following the shooting. While she did not provide specific details about his injuries, she mentioned that he sustained them while attempting to negotiate with the shooter.

Claire Marburger wrote, “As I heard of a gunman, I instantly had a feeling my Dad would be a victim as he would put himself in harm’s way for the benefit of the kids and his staff. It is absolutely zero surprise to hear he tried to approach and talk the shooter down and distract him long enough for some students to get out of the cafeteria. That’s just Dad.”

The shooter, identified as 17-year-old Dylan Butler, a student at Perry High School, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities.

Marburger’s family shared the heartbreaking news of his passing on a fundraising page, acknowledging that he had died at around 8 a.m. on Sunday.

“He fought hard and gave us 10 days that we will treasure forever,” his family expressed.

To honor Marburger’s sacrifice, Governor Reynolds ordered flags at the State Capitol Building in Iowa to be lowered to half-staff. The flags will remain in this position until sunset on the day of Marburger’s funeral and interment.
