A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday morning at the Maguire Correctional Facility’s detox unit in Redwood City, as a 23-year-old white male inmate lost his life while in custody. The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the unfortunate demise.

The incident occurred during routine medical examinations of incarcerated individuals in the 4 East Housing Detox Unit around 8:45 a.m. A vigilant nurse noticed the man experiencing difficulty breathing, prompting immediate action from the staff. The Redwood City Fire Department and paramedics were summoned for further assistance, as they administered life-saving measures. Despite their best efforts, the man succumbed to the medical episode.
