A man suspected in Long Island’s Gilgo Beach cold case murders is expected to face new charges next week in connection with the killing of a fourth woman, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Rex Heuermann, a 60-year-old man who was arrested in July 2023, is scheduled to appear in Suffolk County Court on Tuesday morning. He has already been charged in the slayings of three women – Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello – whose remains were discovered near Gilgo Beach in December 2010.

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s office declined to comment when reached by CBS News. However, multiple sources have confirmed the upcoming charges against Heuermann.

Maureen Brainard-Barnes, the fourth victim believed to be connected to Heuermann, was also found in the Gilgo Beach area. Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to the murders of the other three women and has been held without bail in the Suffolk County Jail since his arrest.

Investigators identified Heuermann as a suspect after an extensive review of evidence in the case in 2022. Court documents reveal that FBI analysts compared the cell site data of the victims’ cellphones with data from multiple prepaid, anonymous burner phones used by Heuermann to communicate with each victim.

Furthermore, a hair found on burlap that wrapped one of the victims was determined to be a DNA match to Heuermann. The DNA sample was retrieved from crusts in a pizza box he had discarded.

The Gilgo Beach cold case involves the discovery of at least 10 victims’ bodies in the area, starting in late 2010. The victims, mostly women in their 20s, were found wrapped in burlap sacks. The investigation initially began when authorities were searching for a missing woman named Shannen Gilbert and stumbled upon the remains.

The Gilgo Four, as they came to be known, were later identified as Brainard-Barnes, Barthelemy, Waterman, and Costello. Six more sets of remains were found along Ocean Parkway in March 2011, all believed to be victims of a serial killer.
