A shocking and tragic incident unfolded in Philadelphia this week, as a man was arrested in connection with a brutal home invasion that resulted in the death of one individual and the sexual assault of another. Thomas Delgado, a 50-year-old Philadelphia resident, is now facing charges of criminal homicide, rape, robbery, burglary, kidnapping, criminal conspiracy, and other related offenses.

The incident occurred in 2013, when Delgado, along with another unidentified man, broke into the home of Joseph Canazaro, a 48-year-old resident of Hilltown Township. The assailants tied up Canazaro’s family, including his fiancee, and proceeded to stab Canazaro to death. They then sexually assaulted Canazaro’s fiancee and ransacked the home before she and Canazaro’s son managed to escape and call 911.

Authorities have identified Delgado as one of the two perpetrators based on surveillance footage that showed them transferring stolen items from Canazaro’s truck into a Nissan sedan at a nearby shopping center. The stolen items included guns, money, and jewelry.

The breakthrough in the case came when DNA evidence from a facemask found in Canazaro’s truck matched Delgado’s DNA. The facemask was also linked to the sexual assault of Canazaro’s girlfriend. The arrest of Delgado brings some closure to a case that has haunted the victims and investigators for over a decade.

Bucks County District Attorney Jen Schorn praised the detectives for their relentless pursuit of justice. She stated, “It would be wrong to call this a cold case. These detectives have spent more than a decade seeking justice for these victims. Like they always do, detectives never relented in the pursuit for justice, and now, we are able to announce an arrest.”

Delgado is currently being held without bail at the Bucks County Correctional Facility. It is unclear at this time whether he has an attorney representing him.

Joseph Canazaro was a well-respected member of the community, co-owning a bar and owning several contracting companies. The arrest of Delgado has left Canazaro’s girlfriend with mixed emotions. Her lawyer, Busico, stated, “The individual that I represent has been praying for over a decade that justice be done in this case. She’s done her best to move on in life, but the events of that day will forever haunt her.”

Investigators have uncovered some details about the connection between Delgado and Canazaro. The two had been in contact with each other years earlier, but the exact nature of their relationship and a motive for the killing remain unclear. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Canazaro had been struggling financially, being $10 million in debt in 2008 and filing for bankruptcy.
